This article is a critical review of Joshua Greenberg’s theory on the phylogenesis of Amerindian languages (especially Mexican languages) as related to Luigi Cavalli Sforza’s theory on the evolutionary genetics of Earth’s peoples. It exposes briefly the history and methodology of romance and Germanic linguistics, as considered the source of Amerindian phylogenic proposals, and reviews the efforts and consequences of Morris Swadesh’s lexicostatistics and glottochronology.
