Abstract

This article examines the creation and evolution of a syntactic variable in Spanish: the presence/absence of a preposition before the complementiser que. Using data retrieved from the large linguistic corpora, it follows in detail the development of a number of elements (verbs, nouns, adjectives, complex expressions and conjunctions) which constitute the contexts of this variation, and attempts to evaluate some of the explanatory hypotheses concerning the changes involved.
