In this article, I analyze the phonological status of the segments [ i̯ ] and [ u̯ ] as consonants /j/ and /w/ in the paʔipá:y language. I discard the idea that these segments are diphthongs or part of a consonant of secondary tonality, a perspective that has been traditionally assumed in the description of this language.
